Why Coaching?
Based on recent studies Educational coaching has grown significantly and gained popularity in recent years. Educational coaching is an intervention by a trained coach that addresses the child’s or adult’s needs in the areas of academic, vocational, emotional, organizational, and interpersonal. Coaching programs within Solimar Coaching ™ are often likely to involve the parents of children and adolescents to better understand, cope with, and support the challenges of the person. Specific strategies and concrete tools from the Power Traits For Life ™ assessment will be developed to help one will better understand their child or themselves and how they intervene with the world through their individual power traits.
The Impact of Student Coaching
Coaching students is similar and yet different from traditional counseling in that there is a relationship that is supportive, respectful, and confidential, but specific in working on setting goals and assessing priorities. This requires a client who is willing and ready to make the effort in making changes through specific goal setting. This is different from therapy, which is about insight, while coaching is about action and getting things done. Coaches focus on what, how, and when, rather than why.
In the Solimar Method ™, the child is first given a 37 question, online Self Portrait ™ Power traits Assessment regarding how they interact with the world around them and the vital aspects of their personality that make them unique. The combination of these different dimensions contributes to who they are and creates their Power Traits for Life ™. ( For children under 3rd grade there is a paper version that the parents fill out). Young People and adults can use these inborn strengths, talents, and newly understood skills to help them learn, identify a career or path of study and get along better with the people around them. After the assessment, the family will meet with their coach to go over the results and make sure they are accurate. In this session, the child’s disposition, learning styles, interests, and talents are formulated into specific goals and strategies created by the coach. On-going coaching is helpful in that a coach is more likely to help the child to stay the course with the individual goals through encouragement, structure, and accountability, either weekly or monthly through face to face, telephone, or internet up to 6 months or on an as-needed basis. The structure of the coaching is open and flexible. The coach is the catalyst and an indispensable component to creating crucial trust relationships with the learner. In each coaching session goals are reviewed as well as building an understanding of how the child interacts with learning, life, relationships, and work. This all results in parents gaining a better understanding of their child and a child gaining a better understanding of how they learn.
